Safety & trust

Meet and trade safely

Simple precautions for in-person marketplace transactions in Canada.

Last updated August 15, 2026

Before you meet

  • Keep early conversations in SellUp chat so there is a record of what was agreed.
  • Confirm the item, price, condition, meeting time, and meeting place.
  • Be cautious if someone pressures you, sends an unexpected payment link, or asks for a verification code.

Choose a safe location

Meet during daylight in a busy public place. Many Canadian police services offer designated online transaction or exchange zones; check whether your local police service provides one.

  • Tell someone where you are going.
  • Bring another person for high-value items.
  • Do not invite a stranger into your home unless the item cannot reasonably be moved, and never meet alone in that situation.

Inspect before paying

Buyers should inspect and test the item before completing payment. Sellers should confirm that funds have actually arrived in their own account rather than trusting a screenshot or email notice.
